The superbly imaginative, sonically expansive work of composer and sound artist Mark Trayle (1955–2015) is the subject of this tribute by friends, colleagues and former students in The Hub and Bitpanic. Co-founded by Trayle in 1986, The Hub emerged out of the Mills College scene to become the most influential improvising electronic ensemble since Musica Elettronica Viva (MEV). Known for using networked electronic and digital systems of its own devising, the Bay Area group currently consists of John Bischoff, Chris Brown, Tim Perkis, Scot Gresham-Lancaster, Phil Stone and Matt Ingalls. Adding to the computer music lineage pioneered by The Hub is the recently formed collective Bitpanic. a wave press, a new publishing initiative by Casey Anderson, celebrates the publication of its first two releases: Casey Anderson's RADIOS and Scott Cazan's Ingress. An installation (RADIOS broadcast via a used FM frequency and played back by 8 radios) bookends a series of performances, including a 4-channel live electronics piece by Scott Cazan. Carmina Escobar and William Hutson, the next two artists producing work for the label, provide a kind of preview glimpse of their upcoming releases with their sets.

The Experimental Music Yearbook creates an outdoor performance of Patrick Farmer & Sarah Hughes new work, we find the body difficult to speak.

The performance will take place in and around the Berlin Forest area of Griffith Park. Berlin Forest is a short walk up the hill from Griffith Observatory toward Mt. Hollywood.

The Experimental Music Yearbook presents works by Jennifer Walshe, Katherine Young, and Brian Harnetty. I will be performing electronics and violin in the Walshe and Young works.

Experimental Music Yearbook’s 2015 issue is celebrated with presentations of work by Madison Brookshire, Francesco Gagliardi, and Paula Matthusen. Los Angeles-based artist and filmmaker Madison Brookshire presents a text score for electric guitar inspired by blues and Lawrence Weiner, performed by Che Chen (75 Dollar Bill }. In Brookshire’s Five Lines, a six-piece ensemble follows a video projection in which a spot of sunlight moves over five, hand-drawn lines, transforming the screen into a subtly shifting musical score. Performance artist Francesco Gagliardi presents a series of acoustic performances for manipulated objects, handmade and found. His gymnastic tabletop performances are exercises in memory and perception, rendering rhythms equally sonic and visual. Composer Paula Matthusen draws from field recordings in sites of historical infrastructure. In this case, recordings of improvisations with recorder player Terri Hron beneath an ancient Roman aqueduct form the undercurrent of a live performance.

An interactive sound installation involving a number of small software machines that I have programmed to approximate a live performance by me in realtime.

A new sound installation using amplified sounds of various common electrical appliances and a computer that listens and picks out tones in real-time from the acoustics in the space to playback as sine tones. The Experimental Music Yearbook is pleased to present a concert at the Center for New Music (55 Taylor St. San Francisco, CA } featuring works from across the musical spectrum. Now entering its 5th year, the Experimental Music Yearbook (www.experimentalmusicyearbook.com } is a curated online repository of contemporary experimental music. Downloadable scores, along with audio from past performances, showcase the diversity of compositional techniques and performances practices that are in use today. This concert presentation will have a dual focus. The first half features work from 2012 guest editor Laura Steenberge and her colleagues at Stanford University. The second half will feature works from throughout the years of the Yearbook’s existence.

All of the pieces will be performed by the composers themselves and the EMY Players, a performance group dedicated to the realization of these works.

Now entering its 4th year, The Experimental Music Yearbook is a repository for composers, performers, and the public to glean the methods and styles of various artists working in the experimental music tradition. As the modes of experimentation in the arts change from year to year, the Experimental Music Yearbook’s annual issues will build into a comprehensive, and varied, database of experimentation in music/sound.

For this concert, the editors (Casey Anderson, Scott Cazan, and John Hastings } will select highlights from the first three years to spotlight the different methods composers use to create their music. Differing in concept and execution, the compositions display the full range given to performers in realizing works in the experimental tradition. Isaac Schankler will be unveiling a new piece of software for electroacoustic improvisation and Casey Anderson (saxophone }, Scott Cazan (electronics }, Daniel Corral (accordion } and Corey Fogel (percussion } will be performing with it. Additionally, in the spirit of chaotic collaboration, Sean Deyoe and Christopher O'Leary will be providing sculptural/visual interlocutions for part of the show.

I wiill be performing music to solder by at a workshop on basic electronics by Chris Kallmyer.

"Learn to solder in this two-hour workshop! Participants will learn to solder by building a primitive, but rad synthesizer. During the workshop, musician Scott Cazan will play music to solder by, using the conductivity of soldering irons as musical material. As people get their synths working, they can join Scott in his texture of soldering, synthy goodness. By the end of the workshop everyone will play a simple and inevitably out of tune musical piece together."

 

Julia Goodman, artist and papermaker, and sound artist Scott Cazan have developed a workshop for a hands-on exploration of pre-paper technology using the amazing, edible, seasonal beet.

During this two hour workshop, Julia will first discuss the range of materials used prior to the invention of paper. After we geek out on historical craft, Julia and Scott will lead participants in pounding out their own piece of beet papyrus. Beet papyrus is a gorgeous, translucent pink, red, and yellow that you can use to write a letter or decorate your home. While you hammer, Scott will transform your work into beats (get it? } and, for your snacking pleasure, chef Iyara Giminski will make chocolate beet cupcakes with lemony cream cheese beet frosting. This is one multi-sensory event for the books.

Each work takes the elemental simplicity seen in Cage’s number pieces to varying extremes, yielding an elegant series of sound works that prove that the quartet is an orchestra of potentials.

On May 1st, 2010, artSpa and Machine Project will host an overnight Dream-In at the Hammer Museum. Dreamers are invited to camp out in the Hammer courtyard and collect any dreams that occur during their stay. The evening will feature experimental dreaming workshops, concerts, and bedtime stories, followed by a waking concert in the morning, all facilitated by a dreamy batch of local artist-psychonauts. The following day museum patrons may encounter dream reenactments, workshops, and napping music during their visit.

RedBlack is an avant-garde concert event that will highlight emerging trends in crushed electronica music and new media art blended with dance and "flash mob" dance.  Directed by Ron Sedgwick, it features work by composers Ron Sedgwick, Salman Bakht, Tim Beutler, Scott Cazan, and Luke Thomas Taylor; composer-dancer Alysia Michelle James; artist Elizabeth Folk; movement artist Rachel B. Lindt and choreographer Abigail M. Linton, among others.

The genre-bending festival from the CalArts Center for Experiments in Art, Information and Technology returns with two concerts that each run from abstract reveries to flat-out sonic raucousness. John Wiese, founding member of the concrète grindcore band Sissy Spacek, opens the fest to crackling effect, followed by Peruvian-born avant-garde turntablist Maria Chavez, who uses new and broken needles (“pencils of sound” } and distressed vinyl to spin brooding webs of electroacoustic sound. The night concludes with composer Marcus Schmickler, of Pluramon pop fame, and two newly revised works of surround-sound computer music derived from astrophysical data. The second program kicks off with electronics and laptop interpenetrations by Better Than Future, comprising Casey Anderson, Scott Cazan and Elisabeth McMullin. Next up is a multimedia performance by Steve Roden that ruminates on desert landscapes outside Marfa, Tex., and the minimalist forms of Donald Judd through juxtapositions of field recordings, live improvisation, graphic notation, acoustic objects, electronics and video. The festival’s smashing finale arrives courtesy of Bloody Claws, aka Carla Bozulich, a sound artist who works in numerous impromptu formats and who has toured and recorded extensively with the Geraldine Fibbers, Scarnella and Evangelista. She appears alongside a very special guest.
